4 × 4 Sudoku for children

Mini Sudoku keeps the classic no-repeat idea while reducing the number of cells to sixteen. In a row containing 1, 2 and 4, the missing digit must be 3; check its column and 2 × 2 box before entering it. An adult can ask the child to say which rule rules out each alternative. When four digits feel familiar, try 6 × 6 Sudoku for kids.

Four numbers to explore

Each thick-bordered box is two cells wide and two cells tall. Check the row, column and box before choosing a number.

Try one missing number

Find a row with just one empty cell. Which number from 1 to 4 is missing? Check that it also fits the column and box.

Playing together

Take turns choosing a cell and saying why a number fits. The timer is optional to look at, mistakes never end the game, and Undo takes back any move. Every mini Sudoku here can be solved by finding the one missing number, one step at a time.

Ready for a bigger grid?

Move to 6 × 6 Sudoku when the small grid feels familiar. You will use six numbers instead of four. There is no need to rush.

A few helpful answers

There is no set age. A 4 × 4 grid suits anyone who can recognise the numbers 1 to 4 and is ready to check a row, a column and a box.

Ask which numbers are already in the row, then the column, then the box. Saying the missing number aloud is often enough. The Hint button explains one step in words.
